You’re invited join us for an open session of TEPRI’s Energy Opportunities Coalition (EOC) with guest speaker Professor Sanya Carley from Indiana University on Tuesday, May 18th at 12 PM Central.
This has already been an eventful 2021 for energy and social equity, and February’s winter storm brought front and center the experience of energy insecurity for many people.
TEPRI developed a state-wide Coalition to explore and launch cross-collaboration opportunities that maximize the impacts from dispersed funding sources to create clean energy opportunities that aid in the COVID-19 response and economic recovery efforts and beyond.
TEPRI launched a survey to 953 participants that aimed to gauge how households across Texas and across the income spectrum were impacted by the storm and to understand the lingering effects, such as increased anxiety about bills or damage to their residence.
Last week’s storm exposed vulnerabilities in our energy system that most of us considered unimaginable. Many of us, along with our loved ones, experienced first-hand what energy insecurity feels like, and there are collective calls from all sides to figure out what we must do to make sure we never suffer such systemic failure again.

As of October 1, 2020, disconnections for nonpayment may resume for Texas residential retail electric customers. The COVID-19 Electricity Relief Program (ERP) has been helping unemployed customers of Retail Electric Providers (REPs) by providing protection from disconnections for nonpayment. At a time such as this crisis, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is our nation’s first line of defense to address utility crisis, stabilize households, and address significant arrearages.
