TEPRI was thrilled to host some of the most dynamic thinkers in energy equity at our June Energy Opportunity Speakers Series in-person event titled “Dynamic Innovations in Energy Efficiency” at the University of Houston.
 
Dr. Robert D. Bullard, renowned environmental justice advocate and recipient of the 2024 Time Magazine Earth Award, provided insight into the historic need for equitable clean energy investments to support grid modernization and resilience for disadvantaged communities. He shared the importance of advancing strategies and the advantages current funding offers to confront the challenges of high energy burden, housing quality, and decarbonization to build healthier homes and lifestyles. 
 
Donnel Baird, founder of BlocPower and recipient of Time Magazine’s 2022 “Dreamer of the Year” award, shared BlocPower’s approach to building electrification and how communities in Texas can utilize it to address the energy challenges low-income Texans face. His innovative and technology-driven approach provides a supportive roadmap to communities as they navigate the complexities of electrification to reduce and remove barriers to entry. 
 
Following our keynote speakers, TEPRI moderated a panel discussion featuring Dr. Robert D. Bullard, Donnel Baird, and Huey German-Wilson of the Northeast Houston Redevelopment Council. The panel explored the infrastructure investment and clean energy ownership opportunities that are becoming available for the first time to many disadvantaged and under-resourced communities through IIJA, IRA, and Justice40 initiatives.
